This emulsified sugar scrub will leave your skin feeling silky smooth without leaving behind an oily residue. The emulsifier creates a hom*ogeneous scrub that prevents the oils from pooling at the top of your container. Personally, I prefer an emulsified scrub to one that is not emulsified because when it mixes with water, it creates a lotion like feeling making it easier to exfoliate.

What is an emulsified scrub?

An emulsified sugar scrub is a scrub that will turn into a lotion consistency when introduced to water. This emulsion will make the scrub easier to exfoliate and will rinse off easily. It leaves your skin feeling silky smooth and hydrated.

The thing that I love about an emulsified scrub is that it does not leave behind a greasy residue that is found with sugar scrubs that are not emulsified.

How to create an emulsified sugar scrub?

In this emulsified sugar scrub I have used grapeseed oil to give us a nice moisturizer. You can have fun with this sugar scrub an swap the grapeseed oil out for the oils and butters of your choice.

The key to a creamy lotion like scrub is the emulsifier and co-emulsifier. In this recipe I am using emulsifying wax nf as the emulsifier and stearic acid as the co-emulsifier.

Ingredient Overview

Sugar – We are using a white granulated sugar as our exfoliant. I love to use sugar because it is affordable and natural. The sugar granules are strong enough to get those dead skin cells off but are gentle on your skin.

Carrier Oil – For my carrier oil, I am using Grapeseed Oil, but you can swap this out for any carrier oil that you would like.

Emulsifying Wax NF – We use the emulsifying wax to make the scrub feel more luxurious and to make it rinse off without leaving your skin feeling greasy. It also helps to reduce the separation of the oils, like you typically get with a sugar scrub that is not emulsified.

Stearic Acid – Steric acid is used with the emulsifying wax to help with the emulsifying. The combination of the stearic acid and the emulsifying wax, create the perfect consistency for the scrub. Once you start to use the emulsified sugar scrub, you will notice that it turns into a lotion like consistency, this is due to the emulsifiers that we added.

Fragrance – For this emulsified sugar scrub, I am using Watermelon Lemonade fragrance oil.

Preservative – For the preservative, I am using Liquid Germall Plus. Since you will typically be using the scrub in the shower or near water, I feel that it is best to add a preservative to it. Without a preservative, any water that gets into the scrub will lead to bacterial growing.

Mica Powder – I like to add just a bit of mica powder to the sugar scrub, just to make it look nicer.

Making Emulsified Sugar Scrub

1. Weigh out all of your ingredients.

2. Put the shea butter, emulsifying wax, steric acid and grapeseed oil into a heat safe container.

3. Melt on a double boiler until completely melted.

4. Add in the sugar and mix well.

5. Add Watermelon Lemonade fragrance oil and preservative, then mix well.

6. Allow the scrub to cool completely then mix again.

7. Package.
