E-cigarette maker Juul Labs Inc has agreed to pay $462 million to settle claims by six U.S. states including New York and California that it unlawfully marketed its addictive products to minors, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The ban was put in place in 2022 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the country saw a rapid rise in vaping use by teenagers. The FDA said the change didn't amount to authorising the products for sale and that a full review of Juul's products is pending.

The settlement also dissolved the tobacco industry groups Tobacco Institute, the Center for Indoor Air Research, and the Council for Tobacco Research. In the MSA, the original participating manufacturers (OPM) agreed to pay a minimum of $206 billion over the first 25 years of the agreement.

Juul Labs has agreed to a $1.2 billion settlement with 10,000 individual plaintiffs for the company's role in the youth vaping epidemic. The landmark settlement resolves thousands of individual claims relating to marketing practices and severe addiction to Juul products.

On October 10, Chhabria issued final approval of the $725 million settlement. The Hill reported at the time that affected parties had until November 9 (30 days after the judge's order) to file appeals against the judgement.
