FROM PAGE ONE DURHAM EDITION 3 charged in Durham violence BY AMANDA GARRETT STAFF WRITER DURHAM Three men were charged in a crime spree early Thursday that involved random shooting with an automatic rifle and robberies. No one was injured during the shooting which extended from the Duke University Medical Center area to the streets around Whitted School but bystanders clearly were shaken by the violence, police said. Three suspects, who were in a car that police say was stolen, were arrested about 2:30 a.m. after the car crashed into a fence in front of a house in the 300 block of Umstead Street. Police did not release the suspects' names initially.

The three were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and possession of a NOISE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1B bothered by jet noise. "That was one of the considerations and one of the things we investigated in coming out here," said Eugene Sturdivant, who moved to Dominion Park in 1993. "We're very content." Lenda Goulding, a real estate agent with Property Associates in Cary, said airport noise had become "a non-issue." Goulding lives and sells homes in Huntington Woods in Morrisville, an area where property owners by law must disclose the moderate noise levels from airplanes to potential buyers. "I think that the panic around it took place several years ago," she said. "The people who think it's still there probably haven't been out there.

I have never lost a buyer airport noise." She said that homes in Huntington Woods and nearby Preston in Cary don't stay on the market for long and that their values aren't affected by their proximity to the airport. She predicted the same would be true for the Toll Brothers development. "It won't be a problem as long as they plan it well, and Toll Brothers, I'm sure, will," Goulding said. Tillie Pegram has lived with airport noise most of her life, first in Morrisville, and for the last 10 years, in a house off Westgate Road. Friday, mowing her lawn with her dog, Max, tagging along behind her, Pegram said the airport made for a decent neighbor.

"It's like living anywhere else, but the airplanes make a big fuss." She said the noise was the worst when the weather was bad or when the landings and take-offs were most frequent. But she'd take loud HOSPITAL CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1B will be looking for all types of input on how to make it better," he said. Duke officials did not return several calls Friday seeking comment. The health board is not the only county organization looking for more say in the proposed alliance. The five county commissioners voted last month to hire an outside consultant to examine the hospitals' proposal and to make sure the county, which owns Durham Regional, gets a fair deal.

"It's such a major decision that we weapon of mass death and destruction, all felony charges. They also were charged with misdemeanor counts of discharging a firearm within the city limits and damaging personal property. Police suspect the car a white Chrysler Cirrus that was reported stolen earlier was used in several robbery attempts and an armed robbery of two men on Shirley Street. In addition, police say shots were fired through a home at 1003 South St. It's unclear when the crime spree began, but police began receiving calls about men matching their descriptions just after midnight.

According to reports, two Durham men were the first to notify police. They flagged down a police patrol car at the corner of Erwin Road and LaSalle Street and told officers two men with masks and guns had just robbed them of their wallets on nearby Shirley Street. Soon after, a 78-year-old man called and reported that someone had shot into his home. When police arrived, neighbors along the street said the same men had been shooting at them and trying to rob people. With neighbors' description of the car and a license plate number, patrol officers soon spotted the car.

After a short chase, the car crashed into a fence on Umstead Street and the occupants ran in different directions. Officers, with the help of a police dog, captured the three suspects. Investigators said they found a rifle designed to work like a machine gun along with black ski masks in the car. Sgt. A.J.

Carter said Friday that police will try to determine whether the same men might be linked to other crimes in Durham. "If I had to live in town, I'd have a fit," Pegram said.

"Noise wasn't really an issue," agreed Alice Choma, another Dominion Park resident. "To be honest, I grew up with a mother who was bothered by any kind of noise. I guess I'm determined not to let it bother me, so it doesn't phase me at all." Choma isn't hard of hearing; she said once in a while, when she's talking to a neighbor on the phone, she can hear approaching airplanes face," said Commissioner Ellen Reckhow, who is also a member of the health board. "It's important to have an outside perspective." While details of the agreement remain uncertain, the proposal will likely call for Durham County to retain its assets and lease the property to Duke, with Durham Regional maintaining the power to make its own medical appointments. Duke would be in charge of day-today management.

Police Capt. Dennis Ford said detectives were working diligently on the investigation, but were not ready to present evidence to the Wake District Attorney's Office. For instance, while one member might be concerned with details, another focuses on "the big picture." By knowing that sort of information about one another, members should be able to understand better why others react in certain ways, Kirtman said.

Board members also played a "circle game" in which some took turns answering a question and then others repeated what was said. The activity aims to help develop communication and listening skills. "I think the history of the board is that we spend too much time talking to each other and at each other instead of with each other," board member Arnold Spell said afterward.

Throughout the rest of the weekend, the board will address specific issues, including its controversial selection of Denlinger in March and efforts to raise student achievement. Members also will talk about the structure of their meetings. Despite a busy agenda, many said they hope to squeeze in some relaxation.
